to take part in the

SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION
“VASCO ABADJIEV”

The competition will take place live in Sofia, Bulgaria from 16th till 19th of November 2023 and (Third Round and Gala Concert) in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Will be accepted application from violin players from all nationalities born after 16th of November 1993.

The jury, which consists of eminent violinists and teachers with international fame, will award the following prizes:

  1. First prize: 1500 (thousand five hundred) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
  2. Second prize: 1000 (thousand) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
  3. Third prize: 500 (five hundred) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
  4. Prize for young talent: 300 (three hundred) euro.

Special Prizes will be announced additionally.
All participants will be awarded diplomas of participation

REGULATIONS

SEVENTH
INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION
“VASCO ABADJIEV”
SOFIA-BULGARIA
2023

Art. 1 The Non-Governmental Association “Club UNESCO Leonardo da Vinci Sofia” organizes the Seventh International Violin Competition “VASCO ABADJIEV”, Sofia – Bulgaria 2023. The Competition is under Patronage of Ministry of Culture of Republic of Bulgaria, the Honor Consul in Bulgaria of Piemonte and Val DÁosta, Italy – Gianni Maria Stornello, with the financial support of Sofia Municipality, with the support of Italian Cultural Institute in Bulgaria, the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, and NAM “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov”.
Art. 2 The international competition for violinists is a part of the project “Shakona” of Club UNESCO “Leonardo da Vinci” and other initiatives, that has the goal to revive the national and international memory of the great Bulgarian violinist Vasco Abadjiev (1926-1978).
Art. 3 The competition will take place once every two years.
Art. 4 The VII edition of the Contest will take place in three rounds in National Academy of Music “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov”, Sofia (Bulgaria) from 16th till 19th of November.

CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION

Art. 5 For participation in the Contest could apply violinists from all countries and nationalities, that to the date of opening of the contest are not older than 30 years, e.g. born after 16th of November 1993.

Art. 6 Deadline for applications is 31th of  October 2023.

Art. 7 All who wish to participate in the Contest have to submit the following documents by 31.11.2023:

  1. Application after the pattern.
  2. Short autobiography, containing data for the candidate’s education, participation in forums, adjudged awards, etc.
  3. A copy of identification document- ID card, passport.
  4. Photograph.
  5. Document for paid participation fee via bank transfer
  6. A list of the compositions that are to be performed during both rounds of the contest and at the gala concert.

Art. 8 Participation fee should be paid via bank transfer.
/1/ The fee for participation is 50 (fifty) euro or 100 (hundred) BGN and is to be paid at the following bank account:

/2/ All bank fees for payment transfers are for the participants.
/3/ The participation fee is non-refundable unless the competition is cancelled.

Art. 9 The documents under Art.7 have to be sent by post at the following address:

Art. 10 The documents of the foreign participants have to be in English.

Art. 11 The approved candidates, eligible to this Regulation, will be informed in a written manner by 03.11.2023.

Art. 12 Every candidate has to pay for his/her own transport, traveling allowances and expenses for the stay during the contest, insurance and medical expenses as well as the expenses of all companions and others, if there are such.

Art. 13 If the participant does not have pianist, such will be arranged by the organizers with additional payment of 25 Euro or 50 BGN per round (rehearsal or participation), paid by the participant.

CONDITIONS FOR CONDUCTING THE COMPETITION

Art. 14 THE PROGRAM

/1/ The right to participate in the First Round have all violinists that have been approved to take part. The performances in this round will be with a total duration of up to 30 min. They will include:

  •  J. S. Bach– two part /first and second/ through  the solo sonatas or Shakona through Score for solo violin №2;
  •  Caprice/etude/ by N. Paganini, H. Viyanyavski, V. Abadjiev, etc.  or one part of the solo sonatas for violin of E. Izay- by candidate’s choice;
  •  V.A. Mozart – first part /with cadenza/ from the concerts for violin № 3, 4, 5, and 7 – by candidate’s choice.

/2/ The right to participate in the Second Round have the candidates that have been chosen by the jury after the first round. The performances in the second round are with a total duration of up to 40 min. They include:

  • Complete sonata  for violin and piano by L. v. Beethoven, F. Schubert, R, Shuman, J. Brams, Ed. Grig, G. Fore, C. Frank, C. Debussy, M. Ravel, P. Hindemith, B. Bartok, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, P. Vladigerov, L. Pipkov, V. Abadjiev, etc.-by candidate’s choice;
  • Play / Virtuoso play – by candidate’s choice

/3/ The right of participation in Third Round will have these candidates that are approved from the jury after the Second Round:

  • Virtuoso play – by candidate’s choice (new and explicitly for Third Round)
  • Part of concert for violin – first or second and third, or third and fitth part of L. v. Beethoven, J. Brams, N. Paganini, Bruch #1 and #2, Tchaikovsky, Vienyavski #1 and #2, – by candidate’s choice.

THE PROGRAM

Art. 20 /1/ The right to participate in the First Round have all violinists that have been approved to take part. The performances in this round will be with a total duration of up to 30 min. They will include:

/3/ The right of participation in Third Round will have these candidates that are approved from the jury after the Second Round:

  • Virtuoso play – by candidate’s choice (new and explicitly for Third Round)
  • Part of concert for violin – first or second and third, or third and fitth part of L. v. Beethoven, J. Brams, N. Paganini, Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Vienyavski #1 and #2, – by candidate’s choice.

Art. 15 The compositions for participation in all rounds are to be performed in original.

Art. 16 All compositions are performed by heart /apart from the sonata/.

Art. 17 All pieces, sonatas and concerts are to be performed with a piano accompaniment. The concerts in Third Round and the Gala-Concert will be performed with symphonic orchestra.

Art. 18 The results and score of the participants will be announced after the Third Round

Art. 19 Bestow of prizes is on the Gala-Concert. The participation of the laureates in the Gala-Concert is required and pro bono.

Art. 20 The candidates perform the compositions that are going to present in the different rounds in the order that they want, and have to include them in the application form.
Art. 21 The announced program is not to be changed.

Art. 22 All performances are public.

Art. 23 The participants should have scores of their performance, that are not solo performed.

Art. 24 All candidates have the right to rehearse before the each round of the Competition.

Art. 25 The Competition is organized and conducted with the following schedule:

Date: 16th of November 2023, Thursday:

From 08:30 till 10:00 registration of the candidates, allowed to participate and payment of the participation fee. It is conducted by the Secretariat of the Competition in the building Nationa Academy of Music “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia.At 10:30 – formal opening of the competition with a presentation of the International Jury;

At 11:00 – draw of the lot for the order of participation of the candidates in each round.

First Round:

Rehearsal of candidates with symphonic orchestra: 13:00 – 15:30
Hearing of candidates with symphonic orchestra: 15:30 – 17:30
Pause:  17:30 – 18:00
Hearing of candidates with symphonic orchestra: 18:00 – 19:30

Gala Concert:

Date: 19/11/2023, Sunday (timeline to be announce later)

JURY AND EVALUATIONS

Art. 26 The Jury consists of music teachers and violinists that are recognized internationally.

Art. 27 The evaluations of the Jury are formed by rules, accepted and established by the organizers.

Art. 28 The jury’s decisions are final and could not to be contested.

Art. 29 The jury may interrupt candidate performance if time of performance is not within fixed time as per Art 14 (1) and (2).

Art. 30 A member of the jury, who in the last two years has been teaching or has any other relation to a candidate in the contest, must announce it before the beginning of the performance and withdraw from evaluating the respective candidate.

PRIZES

Art. 31 The jury adjudges the following prizes:

First prize: 1500 (thousand five hundred) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
Second prize: 1000 (thousand) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
Third prize: 500 (five hundred) euro, diploma-charter, rank of laureate.
Prize for young talent: 300 (three hundred) euro.

Special Prizes will be announced additionally.

Art. 32 All participants will receive a “PARTICIPATION DIPLOMA”.

Art. 33 The jury has the liberty to divide, as well as not to adjudge some of the awards. Other encouraging and special awards, constituted by institutions, private parties and sponsors can be suggested and coordinated with the jury’s opinion and announced additionally.

OTHER CONDITIONS

Art. 34 The organizers preserve the right to introduce changes to these regulations if needed, under exceptional circumstances and situations, and to inform participants in advance.

Art. 35 Within Competition timeline may be organized additional events as master classes, meetings, concerts.

Art. 36 The organizers do not bear responsibility for any damages of persons and objects, caused on the way to the contest, or during the competition.

Art. 37 By entering the Contest, the participants confirm their agreement with these regulations.

Art. 38 All copyrights are owned by the organizers.

Art. 39 The candidates confirm the acceptance of all the regulations by signing the application for participation in the contest.

Art. 40 Every candidate gives permission to the organizers to store and use personal data, to record their performances and take photographs, register, render and show the concert and parts of it within the media domain, in internet, in printed publications, for the purposes of conducting the contest, advertising and popularization of it, as well as for announcing its results.

Art. 41 Sound and video recordings of the performances are made by authorized persons; the organizers have exclusive rights for their safe-keeping and duplication. Recording by unauthorized individuals, as well as picture taking during auditions is not allowed.

Art. 42 For the interpretation of these regulations the only valid language is Bulgarian.
